Art and Galleries

As you wander around the downtown area you will notice an abundance of public art on the street, in planters and, in the +15 walkway system. Calgarians have an affinity for the arts that is also evident in the number of galleries located downtown.

A few such galleries are:

The Art Gallery of Calgary (www.artgallerycalgary.org) - is recognized and valued locally, nationally and internationally for the exceptional quality of its contemporary art exhibitions and programs. AGC is dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and providing quality art education programs and experiences for people of all ages.

The Glenbow Museum (www.glenbow.org) - with over 93,000 square feet it's open to the public, which houses a museum, an extensive art collection, library, and archives. It has exhibition space in more than 20 galleries, showcasing a selection of the Glenbow's collection of over a million objects.

Art Central (www.artcentral.ca) located at the corner of Centre Street & 7th Avenue. Fashion and art collide in the restored downtown building that also is home to galleries, studios, and a café. One can find featured custom jewelry and clothing boutiques in close proximity to C-Trains and Plus 15s.

Public Art

OPEN SPACES: Window to a View is an initiative by the Public Art Program to provide local artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work in a highly visible downtown location. Ten artists have been chosen to provide an installation for the windows facing the Telus Convention Centre LRT Station (between 1st St and Centre St S.E.).  Exhibition program begins May 1st through to April 30th 2011.
