Community Garden
Join a growing movement: Have your business cultivate a community garden
In 2009, Downtown Calgary converted two planters along Barclay Mall to community gardens. Tended by volunteers, the gardens flourished. They added beauty to the city, brought people closer to the land, and the bounty of vegetables and herbs was donated to charities. It's an idea worth nurturing.
Now, you and your business are invited to participate by creating a community garden in any green space your company controls like existing flower planters or green spaces located at street level and in the +15s.
Growth is good for business
Gardening provides tremendous psychological and physical benefits for individuals. And community gardening is also good for your business.
- A more vital downtown means a better work environment
- Giving back to the community is great for corporate morale
- Garden is a great tool for team building
- Your corporate pride will grow with your crops
Dig in — our Community Garden Liaison will help
We'll make getting your community garden underway easy by providing a community garden liaison who will:
- Help determine the suitability of your green space by checking the available sunlight and testing the soil — Develop a plot map with recommended locations for crops
- Meet with your employee group to help them get started
- Advise on planting, digging and harvesting
A harvest with heart
All the herbs and vegetables from downtown community gardens are to be donated to local charitable groups. Produce from the Downtown Calgary gardens are donated to those less fortunate through various social agencies.
